A Day At The Races and Statement Jewellery

Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady

In Britain horse racing became well established all the way back in the 18th century. The sport has taken place since roman times and many of the sports traditions and rules originated from there. Horse Racing is currently the second largest spectator sport in Great Britain and according to the British Horse racing Authority it generates 3.3 billion pounds in the British economy.

The major horse racing events in Britain being Royal Ascot and Cheltenham festival. Gambling on horse races has been one of the cornerstones of the British betting industry.

Royal Ascot

Royal Ascot is one of Britains most well known race courses. Ascot holds a special week of races in June attended by the king and queen who has had interest in horses since childhood. This week has now become Britains most popular race meeting, welcoming around 300,000 visitors over five days, all dressed up in the finest clothes, hats and statement jewellery.

At Ascot each day begins with the royal procession with the king and queen accompanying members of the royal family as they arrive along the track in horse drawn landaus. They spend the day watching the races from the royal enclosure.

The Ascot racecourse was founded by Queen Anne in 1711, and has since received support of a further twelve monarchs. The Ascot summer race meeting officially became a royal week in 1911.

ICONIC LOOKS

One of the most iconic looks has to be our favourite actress Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady where she attends the races with Rex Harrison. Her iconic and fabulous black and white ensemble was designed by the genius costumne designer and photographer Cecile Beaton; who was fascinated by the
bourgeoisie and upper classes. This statement dress with it's bows and stripes is one of the most iconic looks in film history.
